WineGong - a 'wine glass door bell'
Nice remake! Kui writes -
Long time ago i saw this unusual door bell at the make:blog. I loved the idea instantly! Even though the project is quite simple, it took me one year (sic) to get it done.I didnt like the concept of using a electromagnet for playing the sound. I preferred a servo motor controlled by a microcontroler (Atmega8) to do the job (side effect: programmable “melodies”).

HOW TO - Reupholster a chair with denim

On EMS Labs, Lenore has a clear, well-documented and photographed piece on keeping your butt close to those beloved bluejeans long after the knees and crotch have worm out by turning them into seat cushions.

iMac transport bag

This is just dying for a remake: German company Reinda is selling this bag designed specifically for toting your iMac around. It fits around the base, leaving it exposed, and has spaces for keyboard and mouse. Hey, the thing doesn't weigh too much more than a 17" laptop, anyway. Via Cool Hunting.

Pitch bending thumb piano
Jamoflage made this incredible pitch bending thumb piano! It sounds kind of like a steel guitar when it's plucked, then kind of like twisted steel drums. And you can change out the blades. Totally cool. Via Oddstrument Collection

Light-controlled MIDI module & synth combo
The "Solar Module" from electroKraft is a combination 8-bit synth and MIDI controller utilizing photocell sensor input. We've seen quite a few light-controlled analog synths but using that input to control MIDI results in some pretty interesting audio - (skip ahead to 1m50s to hear it in action)

2D barcode patch

I collect patches for my travel pack, and they're great for conversation starters while traveling. This patch can help you meet fellow nerds along your way, and let them take away a little digital something (website, email addy, favorite recipe) by snapping a phonepic. Here's a sample use-case from the p8t.ch website:
THEM: "Hey, what happened to your leg?"
YOU: "Oh, I broke it in a highly harebrained, yet thoroughly entertaining way. Here, scan my p8tch and you can watch the video!"
THEM: [scans the p8tch: BEEP!] "OH DEAR GOD YOU IDIOT wow ha ha, let me buy you a beer."
YOU: [enjoys beer]
When you have one, you can change what it points to through the website's database, so I'm sure with a little scripting it could even reflect your twitter feed. If you have silkscreen and serging capabilities, though, I'm sure you could make your own! Via Core77.

Powerizing a hex key

Here's a simple trick for turning a freebie hex kit into a hex bit for a power drill. Of course, as many people point out in the item's comments, you can get cheap hex bit sets in hardware and home stores.

Snowboard bench

This looks like a simple enough remake, spotted in the MAKE Flickr Pool: a bench made from two snowboards. Might be great for your out-of-commission boards or for ones so artsy you can't bear to take them out on the snow.

Muzak machine iPod stereo

My friend has been carrying around this empty shell of a Micro Muzak Model 1008 for years with the intention of converting it in to something... someday. Apparently this was used in a university to pump the college station through all the buildings and had long since been left to fall in to ruins.
Using parts you can easily get and very little modifications to the actual case it came out looking preatty good. We reused the original knobs where they were still available for that original look. The tubes were left on the case to look cool, they do nothing.I admit this is less of an instructable and more of a hey-check-this-out-able, but maybe it will inspire you to make something neat.

Phone shakers sound salty

Check out these table shakers made from the ear and mouth pieces of an old bakelite phone. The receptacle is made from blinker lens caps from the original Morris Mini, but I bet they could be made out of something else... by you! They're called "Taste of Talking" and were designed by Hank Stallinga. Via Core77.

Lunch box guitar

A link to this was posted in the comments to yesterday's cigar box guitar post, but I thought it was cool enough to get its own item. Be sure to check out the builder's Flickr sets for his cookie tin banjo and his cigar box guitar.

Steam car project update

Jake von Slatt has published a progress report on this project to turn an old 1929 Mercedes replica kit car (which is basically a 72 VW Beetle underneath) into a Von Slatt-fied steam-powered showpiece.

Recycled plastic bottle sculptures resemble sea creatures
This used plastic water bottle lamp (one of a series of recycled lamps by Lisa Foo and Su Sim) resembles a sea creature from movies like "The Abyss" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Really interesting craftsmanship with these lights that will really fool you into thinking they are made of more expensive materials. Check out really nice 2-liter bottle cap lamp on the site as well.

Snail car

If you've been to Maker Faire, you've likely seen Jon Sarriugarte's (Oakland, CA) SS Alpha Fox vehicle, or his awesome Boiler Bar. Now he and his cohort are building a Snail Car on top of a stripped down VW bug. You can follow the build here. [Via Boing Boing]

More on the Pico-Hydro system

Prompted by the coverage of the AIDG Pico-Hydro system, here and on Gizmodo, Catherine Laine of AIDG asked the developer, Sam Redfield, to provide more information. She tells us that he's also going to try and get a parts list and tech specs that she'll share with us. [Thanks, Cat!]

Magnetic cash money clip

If you're of the ultraslim wallet persuasion, you may be interested in this simple hack to hold your wad: tape a magnet and a piece of metal to opposite sides of a dollar bill to create an outer case for your bills, and ditch that binder clip that keeps poking you in your pocket. Just make sure it's not an extra strong magnet, or say goodbye to your swipe cards. Via Core77.
