Great Year of Weekends!
It's been a great year of weekend projects. There's no new video today, but check out a few favorites from this past year!
The most viewed video from our blip.tv views is how to make a catapult with Bill Gurstelle. We made this podcast at Maker Faire!
The most viewed weekend project video on youtube was the tutorial with Matt Stinchcomb about how to screenprint a t-shirt!
My personal favorite podcast of the year was making a power tool drag racer! Thanks to all the guests that were on podcast and for all the feedback, comments and awesomeness of 2007. If you have a favorite, drop a note in the comments or if there's a podcast you'd like to see made in 2008, don't hesitate to drop me a note!

The Maker File: Robodock 2007

Dale just put together some stills and audio from Robodock 2007. The 10th Robodock Arts & Technology Festival took place recently in Amsterdam. Featuring hundreds of artists either inside an old shipbuilding warehouse or outside on the docks of North Amsterdam, Robodock offered a spellbinding mix of mechanical marvels coupled with performance art. View it here or get the MP4. Also check out Robodock 2007 photo round up from Laughing Squid / Scott Beale (PharPhoto above).

Sticks and Stones Version 2
Last year some friends and I made a Rube Goldberg machine in the woods out of sticks and stones. The Discovery Channel Canada asked us to do it again and Jesse, Brenda, and I went into nature again and made it bigger and better and more complicated. Jesse recently dug the footage out of the archives and edited together this widescreen version where you can see both perspectives at the same time. Jesse's got more photos and videos here and I've got a photset here. Quicktime version - Link

Solid freeform fabrication: DIY, on the cheap, and made of pure sugar

Jeez, I was -playing- around with some 3D sugar modeling and Evil Mad Scientist just totally demolished me in the sweetest way possible...
In February we gave a sneak preview of our project to construct a home-built three dimensional fabricator. Our design goals were (1) a low cost design leveraging recycled components (2) large printable volume emphasized over high resolution, and (3) ability to use low-cost printing media including granulated sugar. We are extremely pleased to be able to report that it has been a success: Our three dimensional fabricator is now fully operational and we have used it to print several large, low-resolution, objects out of pure sugar.

The CandyFab 4000 will be at Maker Faire, of course.

Car Trebuchet Video
You thought the whole trebuchet thing was over? Nope! Here's a video from british tv of a car flinging trebuchet. Of course before you fling a car, it appears to be standard procedure to shoot it with a gun! I'm guessing that they took the engine out first to lighten it up. - Link

Richard Feynman Video
When Richard Feynman was in school he would daydream a lot. I remember a story he told in his autobiography about being in a class in school looking at water running from a faucet and thinking about the curve that water makes as the stream gets thinner. Because he was totally obsessed with math and the natural world, he figured out the equation that would describe that curve.
Feynman also had a lock-picking habit. If someone he knew couldn't open a safe, he'd go lock himself in the room with the safe and crack it in a few minutes and then sit there reading the paper for an hour so that people wouldn't know how easy it was.
I've read transcripts of these interviews, but it's really great to see them! I think every maker can relate to trying to put two sticks together to reach a banana! [via]

Midi-Controlled Electricity
I finally gave in and decided to post footage of me testing my OMG super secret musical DRSSTC. I designed it last year as a paid commission for a Danish arts group who wanted a chorus of six musical coils that could be played by MIDI. I made a single prototype to test it here, but they ran six coils together in the final system, built by Finn Hammer over in Denmark.
http://scopeboy.com/tesla/finns/musical_test_raw.mpg
http://scopeboy.com/tesla/finns/dazed-and-confrazzled.mpg
What I made was an adaptor board that connected the internal tone generators on a Roland JX-8P synth to one or more DRSSTCs. The board converted the volume envelope to burst length, so the harder you pounded the keys, the bigger the sparks got. Hitting a high pitched note hard would blow the fuses, and the MIDI arrangements had to take this into account.

MAKE Podcast:Microsofties Make Bugbots at Maker Faire
What do you get when you combine a capacitor, some LEDs, and a solar cell? A B.E.A.M. Bug Bot! B.E.A.M. stands for Biology Electronics Aesthetics Mechanics which means that the robots are inspired by biology which means bugs.
Vic De Leon and Stewart Tansley, explained that the solar cell doesn't put out enough power to drive the motor, but the capacitor can gather power and then release it. A capacitor works kind of like a glass of water, but instead of filling with water, it fills with electricity. When the glass is full, it dumps out the electricity. Photography flashes use big capacitors that gather electricity and then dump it out in the form of a flash.
One of the interesting things about these bugs is that they are set up with light sensors so that they are always going toward the light! Now that's a clever little cute ecologically-friendly solar-powered robot!
Mark Tilden's work inspired Vic and Stewart to make their bugbots. You can make one too! Both Solarbotics and Pagermotors.com have kits that have all the bits and bobs you need to put a little B.E.A.M. bugbot together!

Make Movie Festival:

The Make Movie Festival was a great success! Phillip Torrone, David Pescovitz, and I worked together to gather all the submissions and explore the internet to find more movies about makers and making things. The movies were shown at the festival on the main stage between presentations. With so many great entries it was hard to pick a winner, but the Marks Brothers' Fun with Dry Ice shined through. Their top notch explanations of how to have fun with dry ice was really great. The grand prize is a box set of Make Magazines signed by the Make Magazine staff, a Make: t-shirt for each brother, and Make: license plate covers, which they'll have to wait until they can drive to use!
The movies played on the main stage between presenters and in the Mobmov vehicle which Bryan Kennedy put together. Usually his mobmov vehicle works like a portable drive in, but since it was so bright out he converted the actual car into a movie theater to showcase the Make Movies.
For all the other participants whose video made the cut, we'll be sending you some special Make: gifts. Drop us an email if you haven't heard from us with your address and we'll send you some good Make: stuff! Have a great time watching the videos that were presented at the Make Movie Festival!
