269 Electronics - Canal street, NYC

Tucked away inside a perfume, watch luggage and fake iPod store on Canal street is "269 Electronics" - if you're in NYC and need electronic tools at "ok" prices and selection 269 is one of the few places. They also have kits (mostly velleman kits) as well as some rare parts. Today the quest was for some NT42/44s and while they're not that hard to find they had them, score. More photos here - Link.

Argo electronics - Surplus electronics in NYC

Argo electronics is one of my favorite (weekly) stops on Canal street in New York City. Canal street is historically known for tiny packed-together stores filled with goods from China and street merchants hocking knock off handbags, Rolex watches to pirated DVDs, but there are a few electronic and electronic surplus places that are a treasure trove of goodness. In the past I've found things like $1 laser pointers, $3 VCR motors (good for robots) and boxes of power supplies. Whatever the prices say on the bins are negotiable, and you likely should... Make an Eye Pillow with Amy Sedaris - CRAFT Video Podcast

MP4 Video | QT Video | HD | Subscribe in iTunes

Last summer I had the exciting privilege to be a part of one of the best panels ever with my fellow crafty ladies, Leah Peterson, Kathy Cano Murillo of Crafty Chica, Kristin Roach of Craft Leftovers, and a woman who needs no introduction, Amy Sedaris. Let me just start by saying that I am a big fan of comedy and improv (did you know I like to do impressions?) so to see Amy in action live next to me on the panel while also talking about crafts was just too much! Our panel was fun and informative but the four of us ended up bonding so well that we hung out for the rest of the afternoon into the night. Here we head to Amy's booksigning and mini-craft fair where she sells her crafts she recently made from fake cakes, fairy wands, and more. Here's a little glimpse of that time we spent and Amy makes for us her famous pantyhose eye pillow featured her book I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence. She's a big craft lover and we love her even more for it!

*Special Note: This video last summer was my first time filming with this new camera, so please excuse any jumbles. :)

Gizmo! (1977 Maker film?)

Make Pt0100
Steve writes in about this maker-like film, has anyone seen it? -

This film is absolutely amazing. The makers in this film are largely mere hobbyists, but their ideas show an incredible likeness to many projects featured on this site (most notable would be the human powered hydrofoil).

Tokyu Hands - Maker paradise

Img 0507
Tokyu Hands in Shinjuku, Japan is a maker paradise - it's called "creative life store" and on it's 6 floors you can find just about anything imaginable - from an isle full of tweezers to the largest selection of paper cut-out models I've ever seen. Here are a sampling of what's there - and of course click on the through to the Flickr photos to zoom in, etc...

Hooptyrides open house

Scaled.Hoopty1
Hack a Day got a tour of Mr. Jalopy's digs...

We didn't even pause for a second when offered a chance to tour Mr. Jalopy's studio. Even if it meant a 600 mile roundtrip, we'd be there. You'll probably recognize Mr. Jalopy as the author of Hoopty Rides and as a frequent Make Magazine contributor know for his giant iPod and guerilla projector. Dorkbot SoCal organized a studio tour so that fellow hackers could pick up some of the Hoopty Rides secret sauce.

Mr. Jalopy spent a long time searching for his shop. He wanted a site that he could work in, but was self-sufficient. The location is paid for by a small retail shop upstairs plus a freeway visible billboard. It's and old car repair shop with two bays and some interesting quirks like 400hp water break dynamometer (gauges at top) and an old hydraulic lift designed just for cars with solid rear axles. He got a unused second Clayton 200hp dynamometer (above) for cheap and plans on combining the two to hopefully get a nice functional unit.

The Plenitude

51Gtnzax8Jl. Ss500
Paul sent in this book for us to check out, any makers out there read it yet? Post up your review or thoughts in comments. Looks pretty good, here's the review Amazon from Publishers Weekly-

The Plenitude is the word of Silicon Valley polymath Gold for the limitless stuff produced to feed our consumer-focused economy, but this small, posthumous (Gold died in 2003) book reads more like his private notebook than a business guide. That's not a bad thing: Gold, a scientist, inventor and artist who worked at times for the toy company Mattel and the legendary Xerox PARC research labs, is good company. Based on a few of his lectures, this breezy book shares thoughts on creative hats Gold has worn, such as artist and engineer, and the worldviews they impose on practitioners ( e.g., engineers like to solve problems while designers are contemptuous of artists for their detachment from the commercial)...

Geek Heaven - TechShop review

Slide4 4
Slide10 3
Lots of people like the stuff Guy Kawasaki writes and he's just reviewed our pals @ TechShop! -

One of the challenges that geeks, inventors, hobbyists, hackers, burners, and artists who are trying to change the world face is finding a place to do their work. Ideally, it would have lots of equipment, supplies, and other geeks. Until the last year, they would have to set up their own workshop or beg for space at a machine shop. Now they can go and hang out at TechShop in Menlo Park, California.

Jim Newton founded TechShop in the summer of 2006 because he needed a world-class workshop so he could work on his projects and inventions. After having access to full machine shops at both the College of San Mateo when he taught a BattleBots class and at the studio set of the Discovery Channel's MythBusters show when he was the science advisor, he found himself without a place to work on his projects after these positions. He was surprised to find that there were not any places like TechShop already, so he decided that he would open one himself.

The Black Hole - A nuclear salvage wonderland

1200159831 529F2B3725
Dave writes -

Every teenager dreams of working in a giant warehouse full of discarded nuclear test equipment, well used high-pressure vacuum fittings and an endless assortment of puzzling devices which may or may not have any value in the modern era. Ok, so maybe not every teenager has this dream, I was and still am somewhat of a strange person, but in High School in New Mexico, this particular dream of mine came true.

Medicine Man

If there are any London makers going to this please take some photos!

WHERE can you find a torture chair, Napoleon's toothbrush and Florence Nightingale's slippers?

Answer: In a free exhibition opening in London today.

They are among more than a MILLION bizarre objects stockpiled by eccentric tycoon Sir Henry Wellcome, an obsessive collector.

And bewarned, some exhibits, a sample of which are pictured here, could have come straight from a chamber of horrors.

Sir Henry, born in America in 1853, made his wedge when he co-founded pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co in London. When he died in 1936 it emerged he had bequeathed his fortune to set up a charity, the Wellcome Trust, to advance medical research.

Rule the Web

Our editor-in-chief Mark has a new book, I got a chance to quickly go through it and once I'm in one spot I'll really really read it - at first glance it seems like the love child of Boing Boing, MAKE and Lifehacker - that's a nice mix. I realize that's three parents, but that's ok, it's 2007 and we need more books like this. The video here is one that Mark made that shows one of the ways you can get scammed on eBay (this actually happens) - Link.

KOBA electronics in Singapore

Kobashelf2
JRL writes -

We saw so many MAKE articles on Surplus/Electronics paradises in the US, I thought I'd contrast it a bit by showing what Electronics shopping looks like in South East Asia. ("Part Mining" is meant literally here!). Maybe the most impressive diy electronics paradise in Singapore is a tiny, well hidden shop in People's Park Center, 101 Upper Cross Street, Suite #03-06, near the Financial district and in walking distance of the tourist hubs like Funan Center and Clarke Quay. Rather small in size, I am perfectly confident to say that not one other shop in the world has reached this packing density.

Dangerous books

1Ba8225B9Da025Df4Cc9F010.L
Mark has a short review and round of some dangerous books, some more than others, including my favorite he Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments... he writes -

Already a huge hit in the UK, The Dangerous Book for Boys, by Gon Iggulden and Hal Iggulden, is taking the US by storm. The first print run of 80,000 has been supplemented by a second order for 300,000 copies.
While the book is beautifully produced and entertaining, it really doesn't contain any risky projects that the title and nostalgic design suggest. I can't blame them -- the authors and publisher would open themselves up to lawsuits if they included potentially dangerous projects in the book.

The trouble is, an awful lot of exciting projects carry an element of risk. Things that explode, burn, fly, and make loud noises are great fun. Safety precautions are necessary whenever you experiment with anything that is capable of quickly releasing a lot of energy. Because many people don't bother with goggles, gloves, grounding, and other safety measures, today's book publishers are reluctant to publish books that have potentially unsafe projects in them.

But "dangerous" books are available, if you want them. Some are reprints of old books now in the public domain, others can be picked up used or downloaded on P2P networks, and some are still being published today by brave authors and publishers.

MECI - Mendelson's liquidation outlet

Outside Vertical Big
Ryan writes -

I've been meaning to share this place with Makers for quite a while now. Mendelson's Liquidation Outlet in Dayton, OH is a Maker's paradise. The website doesn't do it justice but if you're within a 100 mile radius, it'd be worth the trip. The second floor (it may be the third) is loaded with electronic gadgets and gizmos. Every time I go there it makes me want to quit my job and study microelectronics full time. It's literally tens of thousands of square feet of everything from capacitors, resistors, LEDs, PCBs, displays, alarms, buzzers, tubes, mics, speakers . . . the list goes on an on. My in laws, who live nearby, say the place is relocating soon so my guess is that even better deals are to be had. The next time my wife and I are visiting, I'll try to remember to take my camera and share the beauty that is Mendelson's with other Makers.
