Make a Sympathy Doll - Weekend Projects PDFcast

Wp Dollplanssmall-2

In 2003 and 2004 I had an art studio and I would paint giant color field paintings using a knife with thick layers of oil paint. These would take days to dry and so I started making dolls to fill the time. I made the first one, a cute sad bunny, and took it to an art opening that night sticking out of my pocket. Over the course of the evening, four strangers tried to buy it off of me! I didn't sell, but it got me started!

The sympathy doll idea is to make a doll that is so sad and pathetic that it inspires empathy and love from people. You really can't feel too bad around these dolls because you just know that no matter what, you don't have it that bad! I've made hundreds of these dolls, and here's a small gallery of dolls that I've made for you to check out. - Link

It's the 5th anniversary of creative commons this week! I'm licensing Sympathy Dolls under the creative commons attribution license, so feel free to make them and sell them, just make sure to give attribution to me with a link to brepettis.com and you're good! Also if you're going to be at the CC party in Berlin tonight, make sure to say hi! - Link

Make a Secret Compartment Book - Weekend Projects PDFcast

Secretbook9

First you'll want to mix up some glue and mix it up 50/50 with water to make it runny. Then use a brush to brush on the glue around the edges and stack it up on some books so that the book doesn't warp. I used a plastic bag to keep the glue away from the parts of the book that I wanted to keep original.

I'm not the first one to make this type of secret book. Check out hivoltage's mp3 player book! - Link

Make a Repstrap (Part 2) - Weekend Projects PDFcast

Repstrap Screen Shots

Here's what the underside of the bot looks like. You can see the iron pipes that work as a base, the lasercut platforms, and the skate bearings that make it move silky smooth.

Zach of the Reprap foundation has done a lot of work to get ordering the Repstrap's parts organized. He's put together a really easy way to order the stuff from McMaster Carr. I chose regular shipping and it arrived the next day in NYC and then I brought everything to Europe to work on in a Pelican case. - Link

Jay's Making a Reprap photo set

In the PDF you can read about some of the obstacles overcome in making this bot, but those aside, the best part of this project was the awesome team that pulled together to work on it. The folks at Metalab, GRL Vienna, and Monochrom came together to make this project happen. At one time there were about 12 people all working on the project at 3 in the morning and the focus and excitement in the air was tangible. This project is on the same level as the drawbot and the near-space balloon. In all three of these projects, I've made great new friends out of sheer necessary and desperate collaboration. It's been super fun! I recommend doing ambitious projects as a team!

I got my steppers donated to me from Marius at the metalab. They were sourced from 2 broken printers and a scanner. The important thing when you are looking for bipolar steppers is that they have 4 wires coming out of them. This indicates that they are bipolar steppers.

There is more information about steppers for you to check out here. - Link

Make a Reprap Robot Part 1: The Electronics - Weekend Project PDFcast

Finished RR Shotbot

Getting the electronics set up is the first step to getting a working reprap robot together. Besides 3 stepper boards, 1 dc motor controller board, a PWM board, you'll want two arduinos and an arduino tx/rx thingy!

Download the pdf for more information and then download the test code so that you can hook up the boards to stepper motors and dc motors to test them out.

$3 Origami Flower - Weekend Projects PDFcast

2037399058 Cdd01A9A6C-1

Making insanely cool origami isn't easy. This week's video and PDF work to make it easier to make the $3 dollar origami flower found in Craft: 05. If you live in a country with different currency, I'd love to see this in international flavors! If your base currency is worth more than can be left as a tip, I challenge you to make your own money shaped designs. Upload them to the Flickr Craft Pool!

The hardest parts for me were step 14 and 19, so I've put lots of pictures in the pdf that help make these steps easier! It took me a few tries to figure this out so if you're having trouble, don't give up! - PDF Link

T-Shirt Cannon - Weekend Projects PDFcast

1929784487 8Fe1463Bb0-1

I went to a big box hardware store to pick up the parts for this. If I remember right it came out to be about $75 with lots of PVC left over for other projects. It took at least an hour to find all the parts in the store. Seriously, hardware stores don't organize the section with plumbing stuff very well. I recommend that you fit everything together at the store before leaving so you can make sure that it will all work out. - PDF Link

PDF Halloween Extravaganza! - The Halloweeen PDFcast

1754591008 E0D73517Fd

In order to survive the zombpocalypse, I've got an article on ghoulish makeup from the halloween issue in this weekend's PDFcast. But it doesn't stop there, for your survival this halloween, I've included 5 articles from the Make: Halloween Edition. So If you're still not sure what you should be for halloween, you can download this and be set with some options!

The first article is the most important for surviving the zombie invasion. The second article will help you with make-up. The third is a costume tutorial for being headless. (This could also be helpful in distracting zombies from eating your brain.) Then we didn't want to leave your house in the lurch, so there is an article about transforming your house into a haunted house! I've also included an article about dressing up as sushi, but I don't think dressing up as raw meat will help you when the zombies invade.

Download and revel in the PDF halloween extravaganza! - PDF Link

DIY Vampire Fangs - Weekend Projects PDFcast

1602191655 18517F789B

What you see here is a negative mold of my teeth made of alginate. It's a seaweed product used for dental molding. I got it at my local art supply store. It doesn't taste too bad, but the texture is basically like putting slime-goo in your mouth and you have to have it in for about three minutes. Just because it's non-toxic doesn't mean that it's not totally disgusting.

You can learn about this and the other mold making concoctions for making vampire fangs in the PDFcast which comes with every podcast every week. - PDF link

Make a Theremin - Weekend Projects PDFcast

1486247938 A8122Ca83A-1

I ordered a minimum theremin kit from Harrison Instruments and all the parts were very well marked and it went together easily. You will have to make your own antenna and put it in your own enclosure and I liked that because it gave me a chance to make my theremin unique and special. - PDF Link

There are a bunch of other kits you can buy, but this is the simplest one that I could find. Go check out a previous Make: post with lots of choices for kits. - Link

When you make your theremin, put it in an awesome enclosure and make sure to take photos and upload them to the Make: flickr pool!

Make a Foxhole Radio - Weekend Project PDFcast

Sany0053-1

The first time I tried this, it didn't work. It was frustrating, but I just went through my materials, blued the razor blade and it worked. The second time I tried to get it to work, I couldn't get a station, I just got buzz. I played with everything and finally figured out that the ground connection wasn't very good. When I fixed that, I was able to hear sports talk radio! One of the interesting things is that it works better or worse depending on where you put the pencil lead on the razor blade. If it doesn't work the first time, don't give up! Every project you work on can have 100% success as long as you don't mind mistakes and redoing things!

Make a pocket LED cube - Weekend Project PDFcast

1341414331 471A1Ec60E

This is one of those projects that fell together perfectly. Recently I traveled around Europe with some friends on a tour of hacker spaces and one of the hacker spaces that we visited was Das Labor (http://das-labor.org). Two of the hackers there, Peter and Martin, have been making these amazing LED cubes that were 5x5x5 and 8x8x8. They had even made a cube with RGB LEDs that blew our minds. These things were so cool we just had to make one! I had Mitch Altman and fellow hacker tour adventurer George Shammas over to make a plan to get parts and order everything we would need and quickly we realized we could hack Lady Ada's awesome and open source minipov3 to use it as a microcontroller platform and create a super simple 3x3x3 cube. You can make one too! - PDF Link

Here's the link to the programs you'll need to load up your Pocket LED Cube with our little animations, look at these and make your own! - Zip File Link

Design Patterns for Starting a Hacker Space

hackerspace.jpg

I'm sitting in C4's presentation room watching Jens and Lars give an awesome presentation about the design patterns for developing a hacker spaces. Download it now if you're interested in creative communities. - PDF Link

C4 has been in their current space since 1999 and it's version 3.5 for them. They've been through a lot and these design patters are really simple but go really deep into having a successful hacker space! What follows are my notes! They made it clear that these are just guidelines that have worked for them and that they contradict each other, but these are design patterns, not golden rules!

Infrastructure before projects. Get the place and the people and the infrastructure all set up and folks will come up with the most amazing projects. Get the space, power, servers, connectivity and all that kind of stuff all set up so that projects and community can be supported. You need to have a mailing list, wiki, and an irc channel (or jabber server).

You need 2+2 people. Two idea people for scheming and and two implementation people to get real work done. Don't start until you have 4 and then once you've got it going, expand to 10 to start off. These people who start off should be really strong personalities who have experience. "Look for people who have authority (and get respect), not for people who use authority (and get laughed at)."

So you've got your seed group and it's time to find the ultimate hacker lair. Don't let anyone live there, privacy issues come up. You want to have good neighbors who are chill and ok with noise all night and a landlord who is hands off.

You should have smaller separate rooms so that different rooms can be used for all sorts of things. Smoking is an issue in all hacker spaces in Europe and it works for C4 to have a smoking room.

Food is a good thing. It's good to be able to feed people and go beyond pizza. You'll need fridges, dishwasher, and kitchen equipment. It's good for nerds to eat healthy food. Selling soft drinks works to help raise money for the rent. A shower will make people smell less funny and really work on projects for an extended time. A washing machine is a good idea to wash the smelly towels.

Have couches, sofas, a stereo, video games make people comfortable and hang out and daydream and feel cozy.

Have 3 months rent ahead. Larger projects need to be funded. Elect a totalitarian treasurer. The treasurer doesn't say names, but will say that there are three people who haven't paid and he will go seek them out and make them pay!

Don't meet at a company or a university. Independence is important!

Meet every week. Have an agenda and make people commit to tasks. This meeting is for members only. Have a monthly talk or lecture that is open to the public. If smart and interesting people arrive, you can invite them to your weekly meetings. Don't invite weirdos to your weekly meetings.

To resolve conflicts you can use a number of different patterns. You can use consensus, democracy, or boss people around (as long as you are participating too!) People may slack off and it's important to remind people about taking pride in their work! When having discussions, it works well to have people with actual social skills lead the discussion. Learn from them and learn not to interrupt others. You may also want to have private conversations with people who are trouble makers.

This presentation was one of the highlights of my hacker space tour around Europe! I've been thinking a lot about social networks and creative communities and this presentation was really fantastic!
