HOW TO - Stamp your own Valentine's candy

The Evil Mad Scientist strikes again with another fun and simple how-to. This time adressing the official candy of the impending holiday -
Last year as Valentine's day approached we suggested writing new messages on your conversation hearts and loading up your trebuchet. We still advocate catapults for Valentine candy distribution and disposal, but we've upgraded the presentation a bit. With a rubber stamp kit and a food-safe pen, you can stamp your messages so they look nearly authentic, but have much more appropriate messages.Check the EMS blog for characteristically clear photo-illustration. -Link

HOW TO - Arduino charliplexed heart

Jay writes -
Here is an Arduino controlled Charliplexed LED heart just in time for Valentine's Day. It uses a total of 6 wires to control the 27 LEDs. A PIC or AVR could easily be used for this, but I have Arduinos lying around and they are easy to program. Plus I want to be able to have input options later when I have time to write them.HOW TO - Arduino charliplexed heart - Link.

HOW TO -make Valentine's jewelry with Ponoko

Jewelry making can be a lot of fun (even if you're not the intended wearer). Dan wrote an in-depth tutorial on using the Ponoko fabrication service to create laser-cut Valentine's gifts. He goes into detail regarding the specific steps involved in making with Ponoko - very useful stuff if you're new to the process. He even shares the .eps files from his butterfly earring design.

FrostBot - a CNC robot for frosting cookies

Brain made a computer controlled cookie frosting robot, he writes -
The Frost Bot robot consists of a small table-top CNC router kit made by www.fireballcnc.com, augmented with a forth axis stepper motor driving a frosting extrusion device. The four stepper motors of the system are driven by a single board called a Quad EasyDriver, which is based upon putting for Easy Driver boards together and sending them data using two shift registers. (Like a one-directional SPI bus.) This board is driven by a UBW controller board (from SparkFun) using a custom firmware and powered with a standard computer (AT) power supply at 12V. The UBW firmware takes motor move commands over the USB connection from a computer. The computer runs a Liberty Basic application that loads HPGL based vector graphics files, and sends them to the UBW. It also handles homing, jogging, zeroing, offsets, etc. The HPGL input files to the Frost Bot software are generated from Post Script files using GhostScript, and those .ps files are generated from SVG files made in InkScape. Although it all sounds really complicated, it is actually straightforward if you think about each chunk.FrostBot - a CNC robot for frosting cookies - Link.

LED cube from Christmas tree lights

Christmas time is a great time to obtain large numbers of LEDs very cheaply. This instructable uses 80 LEDs from an LED christmas tree light string to make the venerable 3D LED cube. In this case a 5x4x4 cube.

Maker blinged out tree

Jovino writes in -
Once again, we rigged together our make-shift xmas tree. It's fabricated out of modular wire bookshelves connected with bailing wire. Plushies are stuffed all over it. The lights are LED lightstrips set to green (of course), cold cathode blacklights and fluorescent lights. Two 5" televisions battle it out with snow and fire. Hello kitty watches over it all.Maker blinged out tree - Link.

Solar LED Christmas lights

Wheelgirl writes -
It is getting dark at 5:00 pm, and I have a bike shop signs that needs to be lighted at night during the winter holiday shopping season. So I repositioned a solar garden light ($5) in an Altoids box, cut off and took some pieces from some battery-operated IKEA Glansa LED Christmas lights ($1.98), and made some solar LED Christmas lights that don't require a wall outlet for their power. It was less expensive to modify stuff that had already been manufactured than to start from scratch.Solar LED Christmas lights - Link.

DMX controlled bookshelf
Tim writes -
Well, after seeing the many houses dancing to Trans-Siberian Music, I decided it was time to do the same to my house. The problem is that I currently live in Hong Kong and in a 52 story building. Instead I wired up my living. At first the project was going to simply be mood lighting, but then I added DMX to my controller and Vixen Lights and this is what I got. The projects uses 96 SMD RGB LEDs (how is the for acronyms?). There are six TI TLC5940 16 ch controller chips on a custom board I made myself. There is a Parallax Propeller controlling the whole thing. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!DMX controlled bookshelf - Link.
