Next meeting of MakePhilly, Sunday February 17th!

Fabhome1-1
Josh writes in -

It is makephilly time again and this month we are breaking our audio streak with something for the hardware crowd. Evan Malone will present on a cutting edge branch of Rapid Prototyping he is involved with developing that holds the promise of allowing us all to fabricate anything we design right in our very own homes.

For the past twenty years, Rapid Prototyping has advanced as a technology that allows for transforming any 3D design in software, for example a CAD model of a mechanical part, into an identical physical model of it in the real world.

Now in 2008, at the Cornell Computational Synthesis Laboratory where he is pursuing his PhD, Evan is blazing the path to develop the next generation of Rapid Prototyping machines - highly compact ones called "fabbers". These small machines can fabricate almost any kind of object – not merely passive mechanical parts, but complete and fully functional electronic devices, ready to use right out of the machine!

To accelerate the transfer of this technology from the research world into the personal realm, he launched the Fab@Home project which he will speak about in his presentation as well. The Fab@Home project includes a user-editable "wiki" website which provides open-source, free software, parts lists, designs, and assembly & operational instructions for making a simple desktop fabber which anyone with basic hobbyist tools and skills can build for themselves. (More info: http://www.fabathome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)

Also our hacker space the hacktory is offering a bunch of new classes!
We are even offering artist's stipends to make the classes more affordable to a couple of worthy applicants.
We have an intro to processing class, an advanced Arduino serial communication class, and an EZ LED class.
The details are all at http://www.thehacktory.org/classes.

openFrameworks workshop in London

tinkerit.jpg

Rock stars Theo Watson and Zach Lieberman will be running a Tinker.it workshop on their platform openFrameworks:

This is the first ever UK workshop on openFrameworks, a cross-platform C++ library for creative coding, and an opportunity to experiment with building new systems for interaction that move away from the screen and into physical space. This workshop is designed for artists, designers and hackers alike. On the first day, the workshop will offer a cohesive introduction to the library, as well as cover the fundamentals of computer vision, signal processing and interfacing with physical devices, via connection to Arduino. On the second day, participants will work to code creative and expressive prototypes based on these approaches.

If you're going to be in the UK on the 1st and 2nd of March, I'd highly recommend this. - [via] Link.

Natalie Jeremijenko @ Greener Gadgets

Img 2062
Natalie Jeremijenko just gave a great talk @ Greener Gadgets, we've profiled Natalie and her work on MAKE, there isn't a video of the session that I know of yet but I've linked to her work and coverage here on MAKE so you can get an idea of what she does (Feral Robotic Dogs sent out to "sniff" levels of various enviro contaminants, How Stuff is Made (a visual encyclopedia of environmental impacts, workplace conditions, etc.), and Ooz ("Zoo" spelled backwards)... here's a description from the session -

Natalie Jeremijenko is an artist whose background includes studies in biochemistry, physics, neuroscience and precision engineering. Jeremijenko's projects, which explore socio-technical change, have been exhibited by several museums and galleries, including the MASSMoCA, the Whitney Museum, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt. A 1999 Rockefeller Fellow, she was recently named one of the 40 most influential designers by I.D. Magazine and one of the inaugural Top 100 Young Innovators by the MIT Technology Review. OLPC @ Greener Gadgets

Img 2037
Next up at Green Gadgets, OLPC --

Design Keynote: Mary Lou Jepsen, Chief Technology Officer, OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), M.I.T. The OLPC project represents probably the most complete example of "design for sustainability" and social good. Addressing environmental, economic and social needs, the XO laptop is a shining example of how a consumer electronics product can truly incorporate green design and engineering while providing enhanced social benefit.

Mary Lou Jepsen is a pioneer in display technologies. Previously she was an executive at Intel. At OLPC she is responsible for overall hardware management, as well as display and systems innovation. She is also a professor at the MIT Media Lab.

If there's a video posted later I'll update this post or do a new one.
