Wind-proof toes

From the MAKE Flickr pool
Nick shares his remedy for sneaker draftiness -
Biking in NYC winters can be very cold and windy. It's easy to wear a million layers on almost every body part, but we can't usually add layers to our feet. The solution: wind-proof toes, made from dead innertubesReusing bicycle waste materials to enhance future biking - good stuff. -Link

Quadruple layer bike improves your balance

This bicycle makes me question the laws of gravity and balance in general. It also make we think that the guy riding this probably fell in a dismal crash right after this picture was taken. Still, it's a pretty amazing feat of engineering to even get this bike up and running in the first place.

Backpack bike trailer

Lonny Grafman writes in about a tutorial on making your own bike trailer. The folks at the Appropedia wiki write:
It's a lot of fun hauling cargo around on a bike. A bike trailer can make a bicycle more practical for transporting groceries, laundry, friends, etc. This is one of the least-expensive bike trailer designs out there, all that is needed to build a backpack-frame bike trailer is an old external-frame backpack, 18 feet of metal conduit, and some other hardware.

HOW TO - Full suspension ski Bike

This is no ordinary ski bike. Nope, this one has full suspension to help smooth out those bumpy rides. Don't forget, winter is almost over so you better start this project real soon or you might miss out on riding the local hills yelling, "I want my 2 Dollars!" - Link

The Bamboo Bike Project

The Bamboo Bike Project is a collaboration between scientists and engineers at The Earth Institute at Columbia University and a bicycle builder at Calfee Design. The project aims to examine the feasibility of implementing cargo bikes made of bamboo as a sustainable form of transportation in Africa. The ultimate goals of the project are:
1.To build a better bike for poor Africans in rural areas.
2.To stimulate a bicycle building industry in Africa to satisfy local needs.

Riding the (mono)rails

French artist Vincent Lamouroux built this cool pedal cycle to travel along abandoned French Aerotrain monorail tracks. I love it when the future is already in ruin.

Sheldon Brown Bicycle maker passes away

All the parts for my bike came from the shop Sheldon Brown worked at, this is really sad - a maker writes in -
This is primarily a piece of sad news and secondarily a link to an awesome maker's site. Sheldon Brown recently passed away due to a heart attack. Sheldon has been famous and admired by cycling enthusiasts all over the world for his cheerful, helpful personality, his willingness to spread his knowledge, his sense of humor and his amazing site full of bicycle bodging / modding / making / maintaining information. He'll be sorely missed. I feel that many makers will know of Sheldon and his website already and those who do not would find his site tremendously useful.Harris Cyclery-West Newton, Massachusetts Bicycle Shop - Link & more.

Folding bike wheel

The aim is to try to get a really high end city bike or courier bike that can fold up into a package like a golf bag, which could go into an overhead rack on a train or go into a plane locker.

Making a Carbon Fiber Bike frame

Brano Meres created his own carbon fiber bike frame after being inspired by one made by Damon Rinard. He has some very interesting pictures of the whole process on his site. I particularly like the frame jig he created out of wood to hold the foam base material.
Everything began after I read the article "How I Made a Carbon Fiber Bike in My Garage" by Damon Rinard. Thanks to this excellent article, I decided to make a MTB frame, even though I've never dealt with carbon composites before (except carbon brakeboosters I made for my bike long ago). I always wanted to own this kind of frame.

Exercise bike charges your gadgets

This custom-built exercise bike wheel turns a generator from an old Volkswagen to charge a 12 volt car battery. I like the idea of using human power to generate gadget power, they just need to get an iPod cable hooked up to this thing. Lots of other cool projects at the below link.

Wooden bike
Ross Millar writes in about Marco Facciola's completely functional and completely wooden bicycle. Marco writes:
I was mostly concerned that the wooden chain would break. I researched the strength of different types of wood and built jigs to test the stresses that each of the chain's components would undergo during use. First, I used my weight (150 lbs) to see if the wood could endure this amount of force. Then, my father would stand on the jig. I calculated that my dad's weight would be twice the force each chain component would need to withstand. I made the specs high to ensure the chain and sprockets would work even if the wood had imperfections. During testing, I made adjustments to the chain's components, and once I had it figured out, I realized that completing the project was within my grasp.Wooden bicycle - Link.

Bikestand with airpump

Is it possible to be in love with a bike stand? Yes!
...a bikestand with airpump(Heklucht), type Ypenburg The product has been conceived for an art project in Ypenburg (a newly build neighbourhood in the Netherlands). Eight products will be placed in front of eight houses. The goal of the project is to stimulate an interaction between neighbours, while pumping up the tyres of their bicycles. The hurdle is made out of polished stainless steel. Because of this, it shines like a jewel on the grey pavement.Bikestand with airpump, thanks Patrick! Link.

Pedal powered tennis ball launcher
Andrea sent in this awesome pedal powered tennis ball launcher!
This is a chimera tennis ball cannon made from a bike that you can pedal. It is both cleanly powered and built from recycled bicycles. It allows players varying in skill levels to practice to be better at both tennis and cycling. The launcher is towed to the court on its built-in bicycle trailer. A bike is secured to it and functions to drive the device. Pedaling the cycle as one would on a trainer drives the two launcher wheels. The cyclist then aims and pulls the lever to launch balls to the hitter.
