Updates to the MAKE digital edition

With the wonders of the MAKE digital edition, the online DRM free version of MAKE print (complete, vivid recreation online) - we're able to figure out what the top articles are and we share that data each month or so.
After running our "What you're reading in MAKE 12" and "Top articles in MAKE 1-11" a subscriber made some suggestions and we've updated the digital edition - here's what's new: More IP addresses, you can now view the magazine from 20 IP addresses - before it was 5 but there were a couple people that used more than 5 computers in a day and wanted to read MAKE from all of them (awesome!). We've also adjusted printing - before you had to print 10 pages at a time, now you can "print all" - it's still a better idea to print sections and articles (the pages are big) but now you can print all of them. Thanks SuperJdynamite for the suggestions!
So, if you want to dive in to the digital edition you can start right away, subscribe to MAKE (use code CMAKE for $5 off USA) and get going - Link.

P.S. - if anyone is unclear about how to submit (it's easy to overlook):

Mags, Websites, Fairs Tap Tech DIY Boom @ Washington Post

Great article in the Washington post about MAKE, MAKE NYC and more! -
What do you do when you've bolted a computer onto a remote-controlled car, hooked it up with Internet access, a wireless router and a camera but you don't have anyone to show it off to?Mags, Websites, Fairs Tap Tech DIY Boom Link.Just ask Mike Davis. He brought his mobile Internet access point to a meeting with other readers of Make magazine, a how-to publication for people who just love to tinker with stuff.
The 28-year-old systems engineer from Brooklyn found people who built homemade LCD displays, a clock that makes you solve a math problem before setting the alarm and a class in mastering pipe mechanics _ something with many uses beyond just making a potato cannon.

MAKE @ Foyles on Charing Cross Road in London

Craig from the O'Reilly UK office tells us -
How's it going? I took some snaps of the various Make displays at Foyles on Charing Cross Road in London. Foyles have backed Make from Day One - they'd spotted it on the O'Reilly website and were ready with an order the first time I approached them about Volume One. Somehow this was communicated to their customers and they sold out within the week. Since then, they have been the biggest stockist of Make in the UK, and get very excited whenever a new volume comes in, and their customers have stuck by them even when they could order Make on subscription. At present they have three separate Make displays:
It's a veritable Make Fest! Each and every one of the displays is the result of a lot of hard work on behalf of Foyles computing department staff and is a joy to the eyes.
- a tall, two-sided stand with four volumes of Make per side. This display comes complete with four small homemade mirrorballs and is topped by a large homemade mirrorball with Make: written across it in red
- a gondola-topping display with all twelve volumes facing out
- three shelves of Make on the O'Reilly bays, including the Make-related books
One of the photos contains Foyles bookseller Stephen Forde standing before the O'Reilly bay with a copy of Making Things Talk in his hands.
Foyles have done a magnificent job selling Make and have backed us every step of the way, and it's great to see they have been rewarded with a loyal stream of customers picking up their copy of Make every quarter. If you choose to use these photos, please let me know, as it will mean a great deal to them.
Thanks Craig!

NASA - Total lunar eclipse: February 20, 2008

There's a total lunar eclipse tonight, details @ NASA -
total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America (on Feb. 20) as well as Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia (on Feb. 21). During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray.NASA - Total lunar eclipse: February 20, 2008 - Link.An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs. For more information on how, what, why, where and when of lunar eclipses, see the special web page lunar eclipses for beginners.
Makers - take photos and put them in the MAKE Flickr photo pool!! (these will count for the contest too!)

Happy President's day from MAKE - a look at a President who made things - Thomas Jefferson

President's day was once associated with just Washington (and later Lincoln) but now all Presidents are celebrated today, and by that I mean you might have the day off. Here's @ MAKE we're going to take a look at Thomas Jefferson.

Not only was Jefferson the author of the Declaration of Independence, the third president of the United States but an inventor. Here's a look at some of the things he made (or remade).

Wheel cipher - In 1792 while Jefferson was US Secretary of State he developed a wheel cipher to encode and decode secret messages (here's how it works).

Portable copying press - called the polygraph, Jefferson helped perfect this two-pen writing device used to copy letters and used it for all his correspondance. It's like a manual BCC'ing! Here's a Quicktime VR of the device.

Plow "Moldboard of least resistance" - using math, Jefferson designed a better plow to lift and turn over sod more effectively - this new plow had a huge impact and instead of patenting the invention, Jefferson gave it away it - to be "solely used for the good of the people and not for the advancement of the inventor, Jefferson encouraged public use of this easily duplicated invention".

The Great Clock - Jefferson created a cool clock - made from hanging cannonballs, this gravity power clock was connected to a giant gong on the roof of the entrance hall at Monticello. He also needed to invent a folding ladder to repair it (which was later used for other things like getting books and trimming trees).
Others:
- Macaroni machine
- Sundial
- Dumb waiters
- Automatic double doors
- Revolving bookstand
- Beds that lift
- Revolving chairs
All these and more can be found at the Jefferson's inventions page - Link.

Katie Bechtold : The MESSENGER Project
Katie, a spacecraft flight software developer and controller, will discuss MESSENGER, the first mission to visit Mercury in over 30 years. Now on its way to orbit Mercury starting in 2011, it flew close by the planet last month, offering some tantalizing images. Along with the scientific goals of the mission and an overview of the probe's onboard sensors, Katie will present a few of the engineering challenges in exploring the innermost planet of our solar system.
Justin Sabe : MIDI Control -- How to make expressive digital instruments
Justin broke all his toys as a kid and has spent the rest of his life putting them back together in new and interesting ways. He has toured playing keytar with the goth industrial rock band Ego Likeness taking him around the United States, Germany and to Shiney Z's, the finest fetish club in Luxembourg. He also plays accordion and has performed at the Kennedy Center in an all tuba christmas concert. Last year he got a Technician class amateur radio license but has yet to key up because he can just call his ham friends on a cell phone any time he wants. He produces a podcast of cats purring.
Justin uses low-cost components to create fun MIDI controllers. He'll have a show and tell and expand a bit about how to use MIDI for control and how to make expressive digital instruments.
Alberto Gaitán : Remembrancer -- (Part 2 of 2: The Software)
Alberto is a composer/programmer/artist who creates a wide range of new media work. His net-aware piece, Remembrancer, deals with transformation, memory, and the spacial, temporal and cultural resonance of events through automated robotic painters responding in real-time to RSS data flowing in over the Internet.
Alberto will be talking a bit about the applications he integrated to create Remembrancer including Max/MSP, Yahoo! Pipes, and RS485 commands.

Say hello to Mike, our "Made in Japan" columnist

Mike divides his time between trying to finish his doctorate in Japanese pedagogy at Indiana University, occasionally working as a recording engineer, playing guitar and touring with a few bands, tweaking patches in Max/MSP while wearing a WiiMote strapped to the top of his head, and making and breaking his own musical instruments and audio recording gear. He enjoys travel, and goes back to Japan whenever he can find a way for someone else to pay for his plane ticket.
Mike is doing a weekly column for us called "Made in Japan" - so give Mike a warm welcome!!
On a related note we now have 3 volumes of MAKE just for Japan and fully translated (along with updates for Japan)... After the jump I put together all our MAKE Japanese offerings (Volumes 1-3 and also a poster of Volume 1 - I also included PDF samples of each one).
